Brandy Brooks Calls for Fair Food System, County-Wide Transit Options
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Continuing the theme of Montgomery for All, At-Large County Council candidate Brandy Brooks has announced her platform on food and transportation. This is part of a 4-week platform rollout in advance of Brandy’s campaign kickoff event on Saturday, August 26 at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg. Brandy’s platform calls for better access to healthy food, supporting local farming, funding public transportation – including the BRT, Purple Line, and developing forward-thinking plans to address congestion and road maintenance.
“As Montgomery County continues to grow, the Council must address critical issues related to food and transportation,” said Brooks. Over 70,000 people in the County experience food insecurity — uncertainty about where their next meal will come from. Brooks calls for a strategic approach to hunger, nutrition and food access that harnesses the urban and agricultural diversity in Montgomery County.
Likewise, with more residents living and working in the county, access to reliable public transportation and safe roads is critical.
To ensure Montgomery County provides for the needs of all residents, Brooks calls for:
Increased access to land for growing,
Support for small food entrepreneurs,
Culturally appropriate food assistance, and
an integrated approach to food that recognizes the connections with housing and economic development.
To address congestion and traffic issues in Montgomery County, Brooks calls for:
Investment in Bus Rapid Transit to help address underserved transit areas like East County,
Dedicated Metro funding to address safety issues and provide adequate bus and train to county residents and visitors,
Advancing the construction of the Purple Line to create more efficient transit routes,
Ensuring affordable housing options are near public transit, and
Incorporating planning and maintenance of roadways to ease congestion and maintain safe roads.

As part of National Farmers Market Week, Brandy is tabling at the Crossroads Community Farmers Market to hear from the community and celebrate the great local producers that help feed the county and D.C. Metro area. Last week the campaign released the first two planks of Brooks’ platform: Housing for All and Economy for All.
The campaign is holding its official kickoff event on Saturday, August 26th 2-4pm at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg. The family-friendly event will give supporters and interested residents an opportunity to talk with Brandy about the issues that concern them most.
