Brandy Brooks, candidate for Montgomery County Council At-Large released the following statement regarding the guilty verdict in the Chauvin trial:
Derek Chauvin will face the consequences for murdering George Floyd. While the guilty verdict does not bring back the loved ones lost, or erase the memory of the terror inflicted by police brutality, it is a moment of accountability that has been absent for too long.
George Floyd should be alive today.
Freddie Gray should be alive today.
Breonna Taylor should be alive today.
Kwamena Ocran should be alive today.
For too many years, black and brown people have been experiencing injustice at the hands of law enforcement. Dr. King said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We must continue to stand up to injustice and end violence in our communities. We must invest in our communities and divest from institutions and agencies that do harm to us.
